Commentary: The Sleeping Sir Elton

In an interview with Observer Music Monthly Magazine, Elton John said that he would eliminate all religion because it breeds hate. The pop singer added that organized religion "lacks compassion" and turns people into "hateful lemmings." Though he began by saying organized religions "hate gays," Sir Elton did not hesitate to expand his thesis. He also added an interesting note on the role of religious leaders in today's world: "Where are the leaders of each religion?...Why aren't they coming together?...Instead of more violence why isn't there a meeting of religious leaders?"

Am I the only one who gets the impression that pretty much all organized religions do various organized volunteer and mission work? (See nearly every area of the world where there are poor or where there has been a calamity made by man or nature.) Are atheists and non-organized religions the only compassionate ones left? I think Elton also missed all those meetings of organized religious leaders. Like here or here or here or here or.....you get the point. Apparently Sir Elton does not. While I'm at it, would it be very difficult for all the non-organized religions to organize themselves in order to come together for a meeting?
