In a move sure to draw a collective sigh of relief from the juris publici bloggers, the California Supreme Court unanimously ruled yesterday that bloggers cannot be held liable for posting defamatory statements made by others.

"Subjecting Internet service providers and users to defamation liability would tend to chill online speech," the court held, while at the same time admitting that their holding could have some "troubling consequences."
