News: Long Live Gluttony?

A new study published in the journal Nature says that red wine "could make guilt-free gluttony a reality," reports BBC News. The chemical resveratrol, found in grapes and red wine, counteracted many of the less pleasant side effects of obseity in purposefully overfed mice-- resulting in healthier hearts and livers, better motor function, and longer life span. In fact, the fat mice given the chemical were almost as healthy as the mice fed a standard diet. But don't celebrate by gorging on double bacon cheeseburgers and 1.5 liter bottles of Shiraz yet-- each glass of red wine has just 0.3% of the relative resveratrol dose given to the gluttonous mice.

NYT and Washington Post also reported on this story.
